Former One Ghana Movement convenor Senyo Hosi argues Ghana missed a critical opportunity to decisively address illegal mining during Akufo-Addo's first term due to political pressures.

Ghana lost a pivotal chance to definitively curb illegal small-scale mining during President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo's initial term, according to Senyo Hosi, convenor of the One Ghana Movement.

He contends that an early enforcement drive under the administration made significant headway by disrupting illicit mining operations. However, Hosi asserts this momentum faded as political pragmatism and economic pressures took precedence over sustained action.

Speaking to Bernard Avle on Channel One TV on September 30, Hosi claimed President Akufo-Addo scaled back reforms as the 2020 election approached, particularly after receiving intelligence about opposition threats concerning galamsey.

The retreat from firm policy positions, he argues, stems from fears of alienating key voter blocs reliant on mining livelihoods amid widespread youth unemployment.

Hosi emphasizes this economic entanglement has since rooted galamsey deeper across communities, making future crackdowns increasingly complex and politically sensitive.
