The Ministry of Roads and Highways has clarified that the contract for the Accra-Kumasi Expressway has not been awarded, contrary to public reports. Minister Governs Kwame Agbodza confirmed that the project remains in the pre-qualification phase, with a full procurement process actively underway. This clarification comes as part of efforts to ensure transparency and value for money in the government's infrastructure development drive.
The Accra-Kumasi Expressway is a critical corridor linking Ghana's two largest urban centres, facilitating trade and commuter movement between the capital and the Ashanti Region. The project has been in the planning stages for several years, with successive governments committing to its development to ease traffic congestion and boost economic activity.
The Minister emphasized that due diligence is being carried out to attract competent contractors capable of delivering the project to standard. Stakeholders, including engineering firms and transport operators, have been engaged in the process so far, but no contracts have been signed.
The government has reiterated its commitment to completing the expressway to international specifications, which will reduce travel time between Accra and Kumasi from over four hours to under two. This development is expected to benefit traders, commuters, and regional integration efforts across West Africa.
