Parliamentary sports chief hints at possible GFA dissolution after poor AFCON qualifying start

The Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports, Ernest Henry Norgbey, has indicated that the government may contemplate dissolving the Ghana Football Association if the Black Stars’ performance in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers continues to deteriorate. This follows their opening two matches in Group C where they lost 4-2 to The Gambia after leading twice, and suffered a 2-0 defeat to Ivory Coast earlier. Norgbey referenced Nigeria’s experience of government intervention in football governance as a cautionary parallel. He emphasized this was not a current recommendation but a potential step if internal reviews revealed systemic problems requiring restructuring before major decisions were made.
The comments came during an interview with Akoma FM where the lawmaker called for increased public and private investment in Ghana’s sports infrastructure. Norgbey argued that the nation’s poor showing was unacceptable and justified heightened scrutiny of the GFA’s management. Meanwhile, the Black Stars are preparing for a crucial doubleheader against Somalia in Accra during October, a fixture that could determine whether they secure qualification after missing the 2025 AFCON tournament in Morocco – an absence that would end their streak of over twenty consecutive continental competitions.
