Chinese long-distance fishing fleets identified as chief drivers behind collapsing fish populations along Ghana’s coast in a damning global crime report.

The Global Organized Crime Index has pointed directly to foreign fishing vessels as the main cause behind Ghana’s dwindling coastal fish stocks. Illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing sits at the heart of the crisis, the report states, with long-distance trawlers from distant waters pulling the biggest haul from Ghanaian seas.

In its latest assessment the Index named Chinese-operated ships as the chief culprits in the unsustainable harvest. It warns that the relentless pressure from these fleets is emptying the waters that local fishermen depend on for daily survival.

The document also exposes how some Ghanaian-owned companies have become channels that let foreign industrial vessels fly under local flags to dodge fishing bans. This legal sleight-of-hand lets external actors bypass restrictions meant to protect marine life.

A key finding explains how certain state-linked networks are alleged to have smoothed the way for Chinese firms to sidestep certification standards across fisheries, logging and other sectors. These connections, the report says, make it easier for industrial players to operate beyond oversight while elites reap profits.

Authorities have yet to issue an official response to the allegations. What happens next remains to be seen as stakeholders watch whether the report will push policy change.
