Prof Amakye‑Boateng says NPP needs new national leadership to win 2028 polls

A senior lecturer at KNUST has warned that the New Patriotic Party faces a tougher path to victory in the 2028 elections because President John Dramani Mahama’s administration has improved Ghana’s economy, according to a Precise FM interview monitored by Adom Online. Dr Kwasi Amakye‑Boateng stressed that the current rise in inflation and exchange rate stability, credited to the government’s GoldBod policies, should have produced comparable results when the NPP was in power, creating a credibility gap for the opposition. He argued that the party must attract voters through fresh national leaders rather than relying on past branding. In his view, Awentami Paul Afoko is the most suitable candidate to become the party’s national chairman, a move he believes will reshape the NPP’s internal structure and identity. The lecturer also linked Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s political future to his service under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo‑Addo, suggesting that Bawumia’s integrity could be questioned if he proposes new policies that differ from those implemented during the Akufo‑Addo era. He warned that voters may ask why Bawumia did not pursue those proposals while in government, potentially weakening his campaign narrative. According to Dr Amakye‑Boateng, the NPP’s response should begin with a decisive change in leadership, positioning Afoko as the catalyst for a renewed party platform ahead of 2028.
