NPP delegates at Baba Yara Sports Stadium approved constitutional changes making the flagbearer the opposition leader and president the governing leader.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has amended its constitution at a delegates conference held at Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi. Seven thousand one hundred and sixty-three delegates voted to adopt changes that position the party's flagbearer as its leader during opposition periods. The amendment also designates the sitting president as the party's leader when in government. The party reversed a previous clause that made the National Chairman the automatic leader at all times.

A key proposal requires aspiring flagbearers to declare for a specific Vice Chairperson position before voting begins. The current system allows candidates to contest for 1st, 2nd, or 3rd Vice Chairperson roles, with rankings determined by vote totals. The new rule mandates pre-declared slots for these positions.

The amendments introduce three additional appointed Vice Chairpersons at national, regional and constituency levels who bypass elections. New deputy communication officer roles have been created nationally, alongside deputy regional and constituency communication officers. The IT Officer position has been upgraded to an executive role across regional and constituency structures.

The party's National Steering Committee will now include the President again. All card-bearing members can now participate as delegates in presidential and parliamentary primaries. Chairman of the Amendment Committee stated these changes are critical to the party's organisational structure.

The conference featured notable moments including Vice President Bawumia's rousing welcome and NDC representatives' boycott over a late start. Former President Kufuor emphasized the need for NPP to lead Ghana toward prosperity and transformation. Market activity for NPP merchandise has surged in Kumasi following the amendments.

The party aims to solidify its governance framework through these structural adjustments. The amendments reflect a strategic shift in how the party positions leadership across different political phases. These changes will take effect immediately for the party's organisational operations.
