MP Praises Former Attorney-General’s Role In Tullow Tax Arbitration Win

Boamah highlights Dame’s legal work as key to Ghana’s US$393million victory over Tullow Ghana Limited
Patrick Yaw Boamah, the MP for Okaikwei Central, has praised former Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame and Finance Ministry officials for their role in Ghana’s win of the US$393million tax arbitration against Tullow Ghana Limited.
In a Facebook post reacting to Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson’s September 30 announcement that the International Chamber of Commerce tribunal had upheld Ghana’s position, Boamah detailed the procedural milestones that led to the ruling. He said Ghana filed its arbitration request in February 2023, responded with a counterclaim in April 2023, challenged Tullow’s arbitrator Alistair Schaff KC – a challenge upheld by the ICC Secretariat – and later appointed Foley Hoag LLP to represent the state. Tullow’s Statement of Claim was filed in May 2024, and Ghana submitted its defence in September 2024, supported by four factual and legal witnesses.
Boamah said the timeline stretched from 2023 to 2025, encompassing witness statement preparation, tribunal composition and legal strategy. He argued that recognition of Dame’s contribution was essential, noting that the former AG had been at the helm when these steps were taken. The MP stressed that the victory was not just a legal win, but a confirmation that Ghana’s institutional memory and the work of past officials still shape national outcomes.
