Private legal counsel Martin Kpebu questions the necessity of the arrest warrant issued against Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah by the Economic and Organised Crime Office.

A private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu, has asked why the Economic and Organised Crime Office needed an arrest warrant against Manhyia South Member of Parliament Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah when ordinary police work often secures arrests without such documents. An Accra High Court granted EOCO the warrant on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, after the agency said it had pursued every other avenue to get the MP to appear voluntarily. In an interview on Joy News, Kpebu said he could not see what extra power the warrant added to the standard arrest process used by Ghanaian law enforcement. He noted that police frequently secure cooperation through direct invitations or house visits, making the formal warrant appear unnecessary at this stage. While he acknowledged the warrant might signal a procedural upgrade for serious investigations, he warned that extending such tools to all citizens could create new challenges. EOCO had previously issued two invitations to the MP in February before resorting to the court application, following an earlier failed attempt to arrest him at the High Court that escalated into a public incident. Kpebu emphasized that his current stance remains provisional as more details emerge, reminding the public that legal interpretations can shift with new information. The MP continues to cooperate with the investigation.
