Dr Justice Srem-Sai says Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah rejected a direct EOCO invitation without reason, calling his exit a deliberate breach of duty.

Deputy Attorney-General Dr Justice Srem‑Sai has publicly accused Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, MP for Manhyia South, of flouting a formal invitation from the Economic and Organised Crime Office. He argued the lawmaker’s refusal was not accidental but a conscious decision made despite having no legal or practical barrier to appear. The allegation emerged during a live interview on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, where Dr Srem‑Sai rebutted Mr Awuah’s claim that he had previously visited EOCO and simply chose not to be arrested. According to the Deputy AG, the MP had multiple chances to present himself to investigators but deliberately abstained, describing the stance as “deliberate and principled”.

This public clash follows weeks of back‑and‑forth between the legislator and the anti‑corruption agency, with EOCO insisting it sought a routine interaction while the MP framed any arrest as interference with his legal representation duties. Dr Srem‑Sai dismissed the MP’s argument that the office could have detained him during client engagements, asserting that such an action would be improper and could undermine public confidence in the legal system. He warned that treating lawyers as suspects while they work on client matters could set a dangerous precedent for how state institutions interact with the legal profession.

The Deputy AG urged Mr Awuah to reconsider his position and honour future invitations, emphasizing that cooperation with oversight bodies remains essential for Ghana’s fight against organized crime.

No scheduled official event involving Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah or EOCO has been confirmed at the time of reporting.
