28 containers allegedly diverted at Tema Port spark GRA investigation after police arrests, owners demand answers

Importers have formally petitioned the Ghana Revenue Authority to investigate the alleged unauthorised removal of twenty‑eight containers from Tema Port. The petition, dated September 29, 2026, was addressed to the Commissioner‑General of the GRA and listed each container by its bill of lading number. Petitioners said the containers were at various stages of customs clearance when they were discovered to be empty, moved or reported missing without the owners’ consent. They attached a detailed list of the containers and urged the GRA to establish how the goods were transferred. The matter has also been reported to the Tema Regional Police Command, which has arrested several individuals believed to be linked to the incident. Owners revealed that goods from one of the containers were being offloaded into a warehouse near the GHACEM area in Tema, raising fears of systematic diversion while the items were still under customs supervision. The importers have expressed willingness to cooperate fully with the GRA, the police and any other relevant agencies to ensure a thorough investigation. They are calling for a swift clarification of the circumstances that allowed the containers to be removed or transferred during the clearance process. The outcome of the GRA’s inquiry will determine the next steps for both the affected importers and the broader port community.
