GPRTU Deputy PRO Samuel Amoah warns drivers charging above 8% approved fares risk fines or up to one month in jail

Drivers across Ghana who belong to the Ghana Private Road Transport Union must now charge only the newly approved fares, the union has warned. Any driver found overcharging risks fines or up to one month in prison, Samuel Amoah, GPRTU Deputy PRO, told Adom FM.

Amoah explained the union is carrying out daily public education this week to give drivers a clear chance to comply before enforcement begins. After this sensitisation period, compliance will be monitored through the new Legislative Instrument that governs transport pricing.

The union has grown increasingly concerned about drivers who ignore the approved 8% fare increase and charge arbitrary sums at bus stations and lorry terminals. Commuters have frequently complained about such illegal charges, especially during peak travel times.

To curb this, the GPRTU plans to work closely with state authorities to investigate and prosecute offenders. The union insists that sanctions will be applied without hesitation once the grace period ends.

Although the operation targets only union members, it signals a broader shift in how public transport pricing will be enforced in the country. The message is clear: approved rates are now mandatory, and defiance will not be tolerated.
