GPRTU says Aayalolo contra‑flow inconveniences other road users and isn’t a fix for Accra’s traffic mess.

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has told government to reconsider the Aayalolo bus contra‑flow system, saying it creates hazards for other motorists and does little to ease Accra’s congestion. Deputy Public Relations Officer Samuel Amoah made the remarks on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, warning that having Aayalolo buses drive against traffic puts fellow road users at risk. He stressed that without dedicated lanes or road widening, the current scheme merely shifts problems rather than solving them. Amoah questioned why passengers in regular commercial vehicles should be denied timely arrivals, urging planners to adopt a lasting strategy instead of stop‑gap measures. He called on authorities to return to the drawing board and design a proper, long‑term traffic solution.

The GPRTU official recalled that the Aayalolo contra‑flow was rolled out on three major Accra corridors after a successful trial, but he doubts its sustainability given the safety concerns it raises. He argued that temporary fixes cannot replace comprehensive urban planning that considers all road users. Amoah’s comments come as the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) suggests that dedicated bus lanes could cut Aayalolo operating costs by up to thirty percent, a prospect that may inform future policy decisions.

The union has not set a direct protest action at this stage, but it has indicated it will monitor the programme closely and lobby for adjustments. Stakeholders in the transport sector are watching whether the government will revise the contra‑flow framework or proceed with expanded lane allocations. The outcome will likely shape public reaction to Aayalolo services and the broader agenda of easing Accra’s chronic traffic jams.
