Ghanaian lawmakers must not receive special protection from arrest, says government spokesperson Felix Ofosu‑Kwakye, stressing equal treatment under the law.

Ghanaian legislators should not be shielded from arrest, says government spokesperson and Abura Asebu‑Kwamankese MP Felix Ofosu‑Kwakye. He made the remarks on Joy News’ PM Express, insisting that no political status should grant immunity from law enforcement actions.

Speaking directly about the attempted arrest of Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah by Economic and Organised Crime Office officers, Ofosu‑Kwakye rejected claims that the MP was to be kidnapped. He pointed to the video evidence, noting the officer displayed notable politeness and professionalism throughout the encounter.

He explained that the officer belonged to EOCO’s surveillance unit and had served the agency for roughly seventeen years. According to him, this officer could have taken a more tactical approach but instead chose restraint, observing the interaction before stepping back to avoid escalation.

Ofosu‑Kwakye confirmed that EOCO maintained a tactical response team ready to effect the arrest if required. He noted that the team, including the female officer in question, had assembled for the operation but ultimately decided against using force, fearing it might heighten tensions.

The spokesperson challenged the notion that parliamentary privilege should override public accountability. He argued that a level playing field strengthens democratic governance and prevents the perception of elitism within state institutions.
