Government tables improved proposal to striking teacher unions
Government presents new offer to GNAT, NAGRAT and PRETAG as nationwide strike enters second day
Government has presented an improved proposal to the three main pre‑tertiary teacher unions in a bid to end their industrial action. The meeting was led by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu and Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson. They met with the leadership of GNAT, NAGRAT and PRETAG to discuss the grievances that sparked the strike. Iddrisu appealed to teachers to return to classrooms while talks continue. The unions say no final agreement was reached and the strike remains. GNAT General Secretary Thomas Musah said the new proposals will be taken back to members for further discussion. PRETAG President King Ali Awudu urged teachers to stay at home until the leadership gives the go‑ahead. The unions began the nationwide walkout on Friday, September 25, 2026 after failing to get a satisfactory response by midday the previous day. Their demands include a new collective agreement, promotion of teachers to updated salary grades, payment of arrears and a 20 percent Deprived Area Allowance for those in underserved communities.
