Greater Accra teacher unions order members to stay off duty until government resolves pay and promotion disputes.

The Greater Accra chapters of three teacher unions have renewed their call for a nationwide strike.

GNAT, NAGRAT and PRETAG issued a joint directive telling all public‑sector teachers to remain off duty until the government resolves outstanding concerns.

Speaking at a press conference held at the GNAT Greater Accra Secretariat, Cosmos Ennu Kwaw, the regional secretary of GNAT, explained that the industrial action is being maintained because earlier negotiations have not produced the promised outcomes.

He highlighted three core issues: automatic placement of teachers who have passed promotion exams, full implementation of a collective agreement signed on August 31, 2026, and the payment of a 20 % allowance for those who work in deprived areas.

According to Kwaw, teachers who cleared the required promotion examinations must be moved to the corresponding salary levels without further delay, as has been the established practice.

He also urged the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service and the unions to honour every clause of the 2026 agreement without any amendment or exception.

Kwaw called on all parties engaged in the collective bargaining process to accelerate their discussions and reach a conclusion promptly.

The leadership warned members not to report to classrooms on their own initiative, stressing that the strike remains active until the unions issue a fresh directive.

Any future adjustments to the industrial action will be communicated through official channels.
