GIABA chairman emphasizes robust watchdog reporting to dismantle illicit financial networks threatening regional progress and development.

The West African region must strengthen investigative journalism to uncover illicit financial movements undermining collective progress, Chairman of Ghana Infrastructure and Investment Fund (GIAGF), Stephen Asare, has stated. He emphasized that rigorous reporting exposing financial crimes is essential for safeguarding the continent's development trajectory and public integrity. Asare highlighted GIABA's mandate as an independent anti-money laundering and asset recovery body tasked with preserving African financial sovereignty. The call comes amid rising concerns over hidden wealth drains that divert resources from critical public services across member states. He stressed that only empowered, fearless journalists can hold powerful actors accountable when laundering threatens socio-economic stability. This renewed push underscores the urgency for capacity building in investigative reporting techniques and legal protections for affected media professionals.
