Govt announces new waste trucks and household bins to boost sanitation across Ghana

The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, revealed on October 3 at Rawlings Park in Accra that Ghana will soon introduce self-loading and self-sealing waste trucks. These new vehicles are designed to separate organic and solid waste at the point of collection and transport it to landfills. Recyclable materials will be recovered while non-recyclable waste is disposed of properly. The initiative also aims to replace the current open tricycles used for waste collection. Ayariga said making waste disposal easier will encourage households to manage their waste responsibly. He noted that women and children often walk long distances to dump household waste, a burden the new system hopes to end. The Minister added that the government may partner with corporate organisations to maintain and beautify streets named after notable figures. Under the proposed plan, companies with strong financial capacity could be assigned streets to clean, light, landscape and maintain. This arrangement is expected to create jobs for thousands of young people under municipal supervision. The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, assured market women that President John Dramani Mahama remains committed to improving sanitation in the Greater Accra Region. He made the statement during an engagement with traders at Rawlings Park as part of World Sanitation Day activities. Allotey said the Accra Metropolitan Assembly will work with stakeholders to ensure clean, safe and healthy market environments. The government’s broader sanitation drive includes distributing waste bins to households nationwide. This move is part of efforts to improve sanitation and waste management across the country. The Minister emphasized that convenience in waste disposal is key to building responsible citizen habits. He spoke at the World Sanitation Day event in Accra, where he highlighted the importance of community cleanliness. The proposed waste truck system will allow for better waste segregation from collection to disposal. Non-recyclable waste will be handled properly to reduce environmental pollution. The initiative is expected to enhance urban cleanliness and public health. The government also plans to engage corporate bodies in maintaining streets named after prominent individuals. This collaboration could involve cleaning, lighting and landscaping of designated streets. The engagement is seen as a way to promote urban development and public participation. The Minister believes the programme will generate employment for many young Ghanaians. The Accra Mayor’s assurance reflects the President’s ongoing focus on market sanitation. He reiterated the Assembly’s commitment to partnering with various groups for cleaner markets. The World Sanitation Day event served as a platform to announce these new waste management strategies. The initiative marks a shift from traditional tricycle-based waste collection to modern automated systems. The government aims to make waste disposal more efficient and less burdensome for citizens. The new trucks are expected to improve the overall waste management system in Ghana. The Minister’s announcement was made during a public ceremony attended by municipal leaders and market women. The event highlighted both technological and community-based approaches to sanitation. The proposed partnerships with corporations reflect a broader strategy to involve the private sector. The initiative is part of a larger plan to modernize waste collection and disposal in Ghana. The government hopes the changes will lead to cleaner neighborhoods and healthier communities. The Minister did not specify a timeline for when the new trucks will be deployed. The replacement of tricycles with modern waste trucks is a key component of the sanitation reform. The initiative also includes plans to distribute waste bins to households across the country. The focus on household waste management aims to reduce illegal dumping and improve cleanliness. The Minister stressed that responsible waste handling starts with making disposal convenient. The announcement was made as part of activities marking World Sanitation Day in Accra. The event underscored the importance of collective action in achieving cleaner environments. The government’s sanitation agenda includes both infrastructure upgrades and public engagement. The proposed street maintenance partnership could set a precedent for private sector involvement. The engagement with market women demonstrates the government’s focus on inclusive sanitation efforts. The overall goal is to create a cleaner, safer and more sustainable urban environment across Ghana.
