Ghana FA confirm split with Portuguese manager Carlos Queiroz after opening defeats in AFCON 2027 qualifiers

The Ghana Football Association announced a mutual termination of contract with head coach Carlos Queiroz on Monday, bringing an abrupt end to his tenure just two months after appointment.

The decision follows a sobering start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, where the Black Stars collapsed to a 2-0 loss in Bouake before surrendering a two-goal lead at home, exiting with a 4-2 defeat to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Queiroz, 74, had arrived in April on a short-term agreement solely to steer Ghana through World Cup qualification, a mandate he fulfilled by reaching the tournament’s knockout stage for the first time since 2010, earning the GFA's confidence to stay on for AFCON duties.

Pressure mounted from fans and pundits after the opening qualifiers produced zero points, forcing the association into a decision that had become inevitable despite his World Cup heroics.

In a brief farewell message, Queiroz expressed gratitude to the football fraternity while urging continued belief in the next generation of Black Stars, a call he hopes will translate into support for a team now searching for its first win under interim guidance.
