Former Sports Minister Nii Lante Vanderpuye demands answers over Carlos Queiroz’s Black Stars appointment amid poor 2027 AFCON qualifying results.

Ghana’s Black Stars are reeling from two opening defeats in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers after losing 2-0 to Ivory Coast and 4-2 to The Gambia in Accra.

Former Sports Minister Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye publicly questioned the Ghana Football Association’s hiring process for head coach Carlos Queiroz, labeling the selection as opaque.

Speaking on Joy FM Wednesday, he recalled the GFA’s claim of receiving over 99 applications before knocking the process closed and appointing the Portuguese tactician without broader stakeholder input.

He also raised concerns that Queiroz’s profile did not match the vision of a modern Black Stars squad, suggesting either the selection Committee lacked clarity or overlooked key criteria.

Queiroz replaced Otto Addo earlier this year after delivering 2026 World Cup qualification but now faces mounting scrutiny following a winless start to the AFCON campaign.

Ghana is set to regroup for upcoming fixtures as they battle to regain momentum and salvage their regional reputation.
