COCOBOD ex head Fiifi Boafo warns international cocaine origins tied to Ghana threaten port reputation after EU seizure.

French police lifted nearly four tonnes of cocaine from a Dunkirk port on September 10, a stash traced to a container shipped from Tema.

French customs say the white powder was buried inside a load of scrap plastic arriving from Ghana’s bustling ports, where it was mistaken for ordinary waste.

The discovery exploded onto Ghanaian airwaves last week when Boafo, once in charge of public messaging at the cocoa board, used the moment to reignite a debate about national pride versus stigma.

He asked bluntly why Ghana should be associated with a trade that has drawn sharp words from foreign officials, noting that piles of cocaine are repeatedly found in shipments that leave our harbors.

Boafo claimed the controversy is about more than a catchy phrase, it is about how outsiders see Ghana when they hear repeated seizures tied to our logistics chain.

The former COCOBOD spokesperson wants the nation to use each foreign bust as a trigger to tighten port controls rather than to reject the criticism outright.

He sees the current crackdown as a chance to step back from a league traditionally dominated by countries such as Colombia and Brazil, a league Ghana cannot afford to join.

The stakeholder said the next move hinges on whether parliamentary and port officials will adopt stricter screening for containers flagged as suspicious during the upcoming review cycle.
