EOCO intelligence chief urges agencies and lawmakers to unite against growing online fraud menaces.

The Economic and Organized Crime Office intelligence chief Patrick Yankey has called for deeper institutional collaboration to combat cybercrime nationwide. At the African Fraud Stakeholders Dialogue in Accra, he argued that coordinated agency action has already helped dismantle sophisticated criminal networks. Members of parliament echoed his concerns; Suame’s John Darko stressed urgent need for stronger legal tools to prosecute modern financial offences. Isaac Obour, founder of the Anti-Fraud Initiative Ghana, warned that evolving digital scams are draining national coffers and devastating ordinary livelihoods. He said without more government investment in fraud intelligence sharing, public education and capacity building, Ghana’s economic stability could be jeopardised by unchecked online fraud. The push comes as fintech growth and mobile money adoption expand across the continent, creating new opportunities for criminals to exploit vulnerable users.

The call for collective action is not new but the scale of fraud now demands a continent wide response. Obour noted that fraud has moved from isolated scams to a systematic threat to development across Africa. Strengthening institutions like EOCO remains central to protecting citizens from increasingly complex financial crimes.
