Minority Leader questions why investigators sought to search MP's home when warrant covered only his law office.

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo‑Markin has challenged the Economic and Organised Crime Office’s decision to search the home of Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah. He said a court order obtained by EOCO explicitly covered only the MP’s law firm in Dzorwulu, not his private residence. The warrant was secured on Friday, October 2, after the agency informed the detained MP that a search of his house was planned. Speaking after visiting Mr Awuah in EOCO custody, Afenyo‑Markin recalled the MP’s confusion over why investigators wanted to extend the search to his home when the judicial directive was limited to the office. He added that the court also required the order to be served on Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, who would then use parliamentary procedures to deliver it to the MP so he could present himself to the investigators. According to the Minority Leader, the MP questioned the motive behind the broader search and highlighted that the legal text left no room for a house inspection. His remarks follow a series of EOCO actions that have taken the MP to his former law firm as part of an ongoing probe into transactions linked to SIC Life Savings and Loans. Earlier, on Thursday, investigators escorted the MP to the Dzorwulu premises, and media reports at the time indicated that officers also intended to search his residence. Mr Awuah voluntarily reported to EOCO on October 1, accompanied by his lawyer Samuel Atta Akyea, after an Accra High Court issued an arrest warrant. The agency told the court it had exhausted all reasonable steps to secure the MP’s voluntary appearance and feared that key documents could be hidden, altered or destroyed. Afenyo‑Markin has used the incident to call for the MP’s immediate release, accusing the state of political intimidation through the criminal process.
