Edward Boateng tasks John Boadu with rebuilding NPP ahead of 2028 elections

Former China ambassador urges new NPP chairman to unite and restructure the party before the 2028 poll
Edward Boateng, who once served as Ghana’s envoy to China, has publicly assigned John Boadu the challenge of rebuilding and uniting the New Patriotic Party (NPP) before the 2028 general elections. He said the election of Boadu as national chairman carries a duty to fortify the party’s organisational framework, restore internal discipline and rekindle public confidence in the NPP. According to Boateng, the role demands more than routine administration; it requires steering a strong, disciplined and efficient political machine from the polling station up to the national level. He pointed out that Boadu has held numerous party positions, including National Organiser and Acting General Secretary between 2014 and 2016, giving him intimate knowledge of the party’s strengths, weaknesses and grassroots network. Boateng stressed that the party must draw lessons from its loss in the 2024 elections and make a concerted effort to reconnect with its base and the wider electorate. He called for reconciliation among the various factions and tendencies within the NPP, urging supporters of different candidates from the recent national elections to set aside differences and contribute to the rebuilding process. The task, he said, will need unity, humility, hard work, fresh ideas and a compelling message that resonates with Ghanaians.
Boadu secured his victory at the NPP’s National Delegates Conference held at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on Saturday, October 3. He obtained 2,888 votes, surpassing Boakye Kyerematen Agyarko who gathered 2,408 votes. Former national chairman Paul Afoko received 790 votes while Sammy Crabbe got 41 votes. In his acceptance speech, Boateng congratulated both Boadu and his running mate, Justin Kodua, and highlighted the need for the new leadership to work collectively in support of the party’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, ahead of the 2028 elections. The former ambassador noted that Boadu’s experience across multiple party structures will be crucial in the rebuilding effort. Reactions from within the party have been largely supportive, with Kodua affirming that he has no issue with Boadu and is ready to collaborate. Other party officials have also outlined plans to modernise the NPP’s outreach to youth and to strengthen its grassroots mobilisation ahead of the next election cycle.
