Dwight Yorke eyes Black Stars coaching role

Former United striker Dwight Yorke says he wants to coach Ghana’s national team.
Dwight Yorke, a former Manchester United and Aston Villa forward, has said he is keen on taking charge of Ghana’s Black Stars.
He made the comment after Carlos Queiroz stepped down as coach following a winless start to Ghana’s 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.
Ghana sit bottom of Group C after losing 2-0 to Côte d’Ivoire and then surrendering a two‑goal lead in a 4-2 defeat by The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The Ghana Football Association together with the Sports Ministry set up a five‑person panel to hunt for a new substantive coach.
Yorke told Asempa FM that the Black Stars job is attractive because of the nation’s football heritage and because he knows people such as Sammy Kuffour who speak highly of Ghanaian football.
He added that he would welcome the chance to serve the country in that capacity.
The committee is slated to hand its findings to the Sports Ministry on Friday, 9 October.
Ghana’s next competitive fixtures are scheduled for November when they meet Somalia in a double‑header at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Yorke’s playing résumé includes a treble‑winning spell with Manchester United in 1998‑99 and a prolific partnership with Andy Cole.
He earned a UEFA Pro Licence while attached to United’s youth academy at Carrington and also holds UEFA A and B licences.
Yorke kicked off his senior coaching career with Macarthur FC in Australia in July 2022, guiding the club to its first A‑League Cup triumph.
In November 2024 he was named head coach of Trinidad and Tobago, the nation he once represented at the 2006 World Cup.
His stint ended in March 2026 after the team failed to reach the World Cup; he managed four wins from 18 matches.
Yorke’s potential appointment comes as Ghana searches for a new coach to steady the Black Stars ahead of their upcoming AFCON qualifiers.
The Black Stars are preparing to host Somalia in November, hoping to secure points that could revive their qualifying campaign.
