Duraplast loses entire pipe stock in Avenor warehouse fire

Duraplast Marketing Manager Emmanuel Donkor reveals empty fire hydrants and illegal structures behind Avenor facility caused total pipe stock loss after early morning fire
A fire at dawn completely destroyed Duraplast's pipe warehouse in Accra’s North Industrial Area at Avenor. The blaze originated from illegal structures adjacent to the company’s site before spreading to its premises. Marketing Manager Emmanuel Donkor arrived around 6:45 am after being alerted and found two fire engines initially unable to contain the flames due to their advanced spread.
Donkor stated all company hydrants held no water during the incident. He explained Duraplast had to urgently contact Ghana Water for support as they lacked an independent water supply for firefighting. The fire was already well established when emergency services arrived, making immediate suppression impossible.
The manager specifically highlighted the illegal makeshift structures behind the facility as a critical factor that undermined fire safety measures. He noted these unauthorized constructions were where the fire first ignited, directly threatening the pipe stock. The company now faces significant financial losses from the destroyed inventory.
Authorities have not publicly detailed an investigation timeline. Duraplast officials indicated they would assess damage and explore options for addressing the uninsured loss following the incident’s containment. The focus remains on understanding how the illegal structures persisted despite proximity to an industrial facility.
