NPP National Chairman hopeful Boakye Agyarko demands immediate bail for detained MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, citing due process and constitutional rights.

NPP National Chairman hopeful Boakye Agyarko has demanded the immediate release of Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah on bail amid the Economic and Organised Crime Office investigation into the legislator.

In a Friday statement, Mr Agyarko expressed concern over the continued detention of the MP, describing it as unacceptable while due process remains unobserved.

Baffour Awuah voluntarily presented himself to EOCO on October 1 with legal counsel after an earlier attempted arrest at Accra High Court on September 23 during a client representation.

Mr Agyarko argued that voluntary cooperation with investigative authorities negates flight risk assumptions, stating that reasonable bail serves the same purpose as continued custody.

He emphasized that the NPP was not seeking special treatment but rather the universal application of constitutional safeguards for all Ghanaians.

The NPP stalwart cited fairness, due process, presumption of innocence and personal liberty as foundational principles requiring immediate attention.

Mr Agyarko called on state investigative bodies to operate independently and professionally, free from political interference.

He warned that perceived political motives within agencies like EOCO could erode public confidence in state institutions.

The NPP National Chairman candidate appealed to President John Mahama to ensure security and investigative bodies exercise restraint and even-handedness.

Mr Agyarko urged calm among NPP supporters in Manhyia South, Ashanti Region and nationwide as the party prepares for its National Delegates Conference.

He stressed that the party would defend the rule of law through legal support, presence and principled stance without intimidation or provocation.

The call for Baffour Awuah’s bail comes amid growing public debate over the MP’s detention and alleged political dimensions of the EOCO action.
