At the NPP National Delegates Congress in Kumasi, Dr Bawumia said the party’s election of new executives marks a turning point for 2028 preparations.

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s presidential candidate, marked Saturday, October 3, as the beginning of a new era for the party. Speaking at the NPP National Delegates Congress in Kumasi, he said the election of fresh national executives would steer the party toward the 2028 general election.

The congress convened to choose new party officers and to adopt constitutional amendments that will shape the NPP’s internal administration. Delegates voted to select leaders who will reorganise the party’s structures and coordinate preparations for the upcoming election.

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin used his address to call on both the NPP and the Minority in Parliament to hold the government of President John Dramani Mahama accountable without fear of arrest or intimidation. He urged party members to discharge their oversight duties boldly and to unite behind Dr Bawumia as the party moves forward.

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor, in a video message, appealed to delegates to choose candidates with the capacity to restore public confidence in the party. He said Ghana needs the NPP to lead the country toward prosperity and transformation, emphasising the importance of selecting leaders who can deliver on that promise.

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo also expressed confidence that the NPP would return to power in 2028 under Dr Bawumia’s leadership, citing past victories in 2000 and 2016 as precedents for success.

The NPP National Delegates Congress in Kumasi is being held at a time when the party seeks to consolidate its ranks, strengthen unity among members and present a clear vision for governance. The elections are part of a broader reorganisation effort aimed at preparing the party for the 2028 electoral cycle.

Bawumia has repeatedly highlighted the need for the party to accept election outcomes in good faith and to focus on governance rather than campaign rhetoric. He has also criticised the cost of living pressures and accused the National Democratic Congress of unfulfilled promises, positioning the NPP as the alternative for Ghanaian voters.
