Adaklu DCE Rejects Environmental Degradation as Safe Haven

DCE Jerry Yao Ameko warns Adaklu will not tolerate environmental degradation after flooding triggered by heavy rains in the Volta Region.
Adaklu District Chief Executive Jerry Yao Ameko has declared that the district will not serve as a haven for environmental degradation under his leadership. He stated that environmental protection and sanitation are non-negotiable priorities. Ameko emphasized that safeguarding the environment must be a collective civic duty, not just a government responsibility. He called on residents to embrace local ownership of environmental stewardship. The warning follows recent flooding in parts of the Volta Region after heavy rains on Monday, September 29. The DCE urged Assembly members, traditional and religious leaders to implement community-based measures to maintain cleanliness around rivers and wetlands. He stressed that polluted waterways and unclean communities directly harm livelihoods and future generations. Ameko also reminded the Blue Water Guards that their impact should be measured by healthier ecosystems, not just arrests or reports. Rivers, he said, are vital to agriculture, public health and local economies, demanding urgent protection. He instructed Environmental Health Officers to enforce sanitation by-laws strictly, regardless of political influence. Additionally, he urged traditional leaders to uphold National Sanitation Day and report violations to the Assembly. The DCE said communities must prepare for the rainy season by desilting drains and waterways to prevent future flooding and environmental damage.
