40,000 pets targeted in nationwide anticor rabies drive, 9,456 dogs and cats already immunised

The Veterinary Services Directorate (VSD) of Ghana has confirmed that 9,456 dogs and cats received rabies vaccinations across the country during the September national campaign. Official figures show part of the exercise already completed, with the collective goal reaching 40,000 animals by exercise end. Director of Veterinary Services Dr Maryam Boyo provided the update, emphasizing that the inoculation protects both animals and public health. The initiative covers all districts and represents ongoing efforts to eliminate rabies transmission within Ghanaian communities.

The VSD’s targeted rollout prioritises accessible vaccination points nationwide, particularly in high-density urban and rural areas where pet ownership intersects with public spaces. Successful delivery hinges on nationwide veterinary staff mobilisation and pet owner participation. Progress reaches roughly 24 percent of the 40,000-animal benchmark, though regional coverage varies. Unvaccinated pets remain vulnerable to rabies exposure from stray animal contacts.

Dr Boyo’s directive extends beyond September, urging pet owners to ensure continued inoculation compliance. The campaign concludes only when the full 40,000-animal target achieves immunisation status across every district. Results from current vaccination monitoring will shape next-phase strategies for rabies containment.

The mass movement means expanded veterinary access points nationwide. More vaccinated animals directly reduce rabies transmission risks to humans and other pets. Future coverage expansion requires sustained public cooperation and resource allocation for rural outreach efforts.
