Speaker Bagbin Dismisses Call for Parliamentary Probe into Narcotics Seizures

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has formally rejected a Private Members’ motion that called for a parliamentary inquiry into a number of recent narcotics seizures involving Ghana.

The motion was introduced by some members of the legislative house who argued that the reported seizures warranted a closer look at the processes and enforcement capabilities of the relevant agencies. They wanted the House to examine the scale of the problem and the adequacy of current measures to curb drug trafficking and abuse.

In his response, the Speaker explained that he had already instructed the appropriate committees to liaise with the agencies concerned and that any further parliamentary scrutiny would be pursued through those established channels. He noted that a full legislative probe was unnecessary at this stage and that the matter could be addressed within the existing oversight framework.

The dismissal has sparked reactions from both sides of the political divide, with some members insisting that parliamentary oversight is essential for transparency, while others backing the Speaker’s view that the issue can be handled by the executive’s coordination mechanisms.

The next step is for the committees to submit their findings to Parliament in due course.
