Six Denied Bail in 3.9 Tonnes Cocaine Seizure at Tema Port

Six Nigerian men charged with smuggling 3.9 tonnes of cocaine through Tema Port will remain in custody after the Kwabenya Circuit Court refused their bail applications.

The alleged drug haul, weighing almost four tonnes, was intercepted by Ghana Revenue Authority officers during routine container inspections at the port.

Authorities say the street value of the cocaine could run into hundreds of millions of cedis, making it one of the largest seizures in recent years.

The suspects were arrested in September and have been held without trial since then, sparking debate on Ghana's capacity to prosecute major drug cases.

Their continued detention means the prosecution must present stronger evidence or seek further extensions to hold them beyond the current period.

The court will hear next week whether to grant a longer remand as investigations into the broader syndicate continue.
