Veteran actor Oscar Provencal blames weak institutional leadership for stalling Ghana’s creative growth, urging reforms for a competitive future.

Veteran actor Oscar Provencal says poor institutional leadership is a core obstacle to the growth of Ghana’s creative industry. Speaking live on Joy Prime’s Prime Morning on Wednesday, he argued that the sector’s struggles mirror broader governance problems across the country. He described the creative space as a miniature reflection of national systems, where decisions at the highest level ripple into artistic production. According to Provencal, Ghana needs leaders free from political entanglements who bring expertise, vision and tangible action. He emphasized that such leadership must attract members of higher calibre and foster an environment where performance, not patronage, defines participation. Provencal raised concerns about attitudes within the industry, noting frequent absenteeism at strategic meetings aimed at shaping policy. He warned that without stronger governance, the sector’s potential cannot be realized. Stakeholders are currently restructuring leadership frameworks and membership criteria to promote fairness and competitiveness. The actor also stressed that reforming these structures is essential for the movie industry to regain its regional prominence and create sustainable opportunities for practitioners.
