Nii Lante Vanderpuye Criticizes Carlos Queiroz’ Black Stars Tenure

Former Sports Minister Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye has voiced strong disapproval of Carlos Queiroz’ appointment as head coach of the Black Stars, stating that he questioned the Portuguese trainer even before the official confirmation of his appointment.

Speaking on Joy FM, Vanderpuye explained that, given the players available at the time after Otto Addo’s departure, Queiroz did not appear to be the right fit for the national team’s needs. He recalled receiving intelligence that suggested there were over 99 applicants for the coaching position, yet the process moved forward without transparent communication to stakeholders.

The former minister added that the team’s poor results under Queiroz have not come as a surprise to him. After just one win in seven matches, the Black Stars suffered defeats in their opening two games of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, losing to Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké and to Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium, leaving the nation without a point from its first two fixtures.

This criticism adds to growing public concern over the Black Stars’ recent performances and the suitability of the coaching staff handling the national team’s ambitions.
