New health hub for teens and expectant mothers launches in Ga East, boosting local maternal care access

The Kabaka Foundation Ghana unveiled a purpose-built Adolescent and Antenatal Care Department at the Ga East Municipal Hospital, expanding specialised healthcare services in the region.

The facility, officially named the Oseadeeyo Owiredu Wadie I Adolescent & Antenatal Care Department, features a four-room Antenatal Care Unit equipped with consulting rooms, a pharmacy, ultrasound suite and diagnostic laboratory. An adjoining Adolescent Centre provides two dedicated consultation rooms for teenage mothers, offering reproductive health education, counselling and psychosocial support to reduce stigma often faced in general maternity wards.

Medical Superintendent Dr Ayuba Seidu Abdulai highlighted the previous lack of a teen-specific health space, which had driven some young people toward unqualified providers and led to preventable complications. He described the new centre as a timely intervention capable of saving lives through safer, patient-centred maternal care.

Initiated with a sod-cutting ceremony on September 3, 2025, the project aligns with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3 and reflects the Kabaka Foundation’s broader healthcare strategy. Nana Owiredu Wadie I, Chairman of the Kabaka Foundation and Nkosuohene of Kwahu Nkwatia, presided over the handover during his birthday month celebrations.

Chief of Haatso, Nii Amarh Sogbla IV, chaired the event, which was attended by Greater Accra Regional Health Directorate representatives, the Wadie family and traditional leaders. The centre is expected to significantly improve access to quality antenatal and adolescent health services across the Ga East Municipality.
