Hospital calls for safer, patient-centred care for non-communicable diseases
The Greater Accra Regional Hospital (GARH) joined global observances of World Patient Safety Day on October 10, focusing on the theme Safe Care for Non-Communicable Diseases. Dr. Esia Donkoh, Acting Director of Public Health, highlighted that many admission errors stem from poor hand‑over points between departments, urging all health workers to improve communication and teamwork.
The hospital used the occasion to showcase current infection‑prevention measures and to educate staff and patients on best practices for managing chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension. By reinforcing the importance of accurate diagnostics and timely referrals, GARH aims to reduce complications that often arise from fragmented care.
Stakeholders from the Ministry of Health and civil‑society groups echoed the call for a more integrated health system that places patients at the centre of decision‑making. The event also recognised frontline nurses and doctors whose innovative safety protocols have already cut readmission rates in selected wards.
Looking ahead, GARH plans to roll out a hospital‑wide training programme on electronic health records and hand‑over procedures by the end of the year, targeting a measurable drop in medication errors across its outpatient clinics.
