Ghana Academy Awards Women, Pledges Greater Support for Gender Equality

The Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences has held a special ceremony to recognize the historic and ongoing contributions of Ghanaian women across agriculture fishing mining trade healthcare leadership and warfare. Chairperson Emma Mensah highlighted that despite these vital roles many women’s efforts remain overlooked in official records and policy discussions.

In her keynote address she stressed that targeted investment in education skills training and mentorship programmes is essential to unlock the full potential of women entrepreneurs and professionals nationwide. Mensah pointed to cultural norms and limited access to finance as key obstacles holding back women in both rural and urban communities.

The ceremony highlighted figures such as Madam Ama Adwubi a cocoa processing pioneer from Kumasi and Reverend Sister Rosemary Boateng whose health outreach has served thousands across the Ashanti Region. Their stories served as inspiration for younger women seeking to break into male dominated sectors.

The Academy called on the Ministry of Gender Children and Social Protection to partner with private sector players to establish a national fund supporting women led enterprises in agriculture and technology. Stakeholders emphasised that sustained advocacy and data driven policies will be crucial to achieve measurable progress in closing gender gaps.
