Fire razes warehouses and wooden structures in Accra’s North Industrial Area

Blaze destroys two warehouses and numerous wooden sheds in the industrial hub, leaving traders counting losses
An inferno swept through the North Industrial Area in Accra on Tuesday, consuming portions of two warehouses and dozens of wooden structures. Firefighters from the Ghana Fire Service doused the flames by late afternoon, preventing further spread to adjacent premises. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation, with officials yet to release preliminary findings. Affected traders have begun tallying their losses, reporting the destruction of goods, equipment and livelihood assets. Community leaders called for immediate support for displaced persons, urging both state and private agencies to intervene. The incident has reignited concerns over fire safety standards in the sprawling industrial enclave, where wooden constructions are common despite regulatory warnings. No casualties were recorded, but several small enterprises face total collapse without intervention. Authorities have pledged to enforce compliance with building codes, though past efforts have yielded mixed results. The Ghana National Fire Service has scheduled a review meeting with sector players to address systemic vulnerabilities. For now, the affected zone remains cordoned off as cleanup operations continue.
