A former Deputy Director of the Family Health Division of the Ghana Health Service, Dr Isabella Sagoe‑Moses, has indicated that more robust policies are essential to protect breastfeeding mothers. She argues that current frameworks do not adequately address the workplace and public health challenges faced by women who nurse their infants.
According to Dr Sagoe‑Moses, the absence of clear legislation leaves many mothers vulnerable when they attempt to breastfeed in public places or return to work after maternity leave. She believes that targeted policies could guarantee safe and supportive environments for nursing mothers in both formal and informal sectors.
The appeal comes as Ghana continues to make strides in maternal and child health, yet many observers note that protective measures have lagged behind regional standards.
