Nana Asafo-Adjei Ayeh details how EOCO questioned Baffour Awuah about his role as a lawyer in the SIC Life matter

The Bosome Freho Member of Parliament, Nana Asafo-Adjei Ayeh, has clarified that the questioning of his colleague, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, the Manhyia South MP, by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (ECO C) focused specifically on the SIC Life matter.

According to the Freho MP, ECO C officials spent several hours interrogating Baffour Awuah about his work as a legal practitioner and the nature of his involvement in the SIC issue. He stressed that the Manhyia South MP was never an employee of SIC; rather, he was hired as a lawyer and paid by a third party for legal services.

“They asked him a few questions about his role, his professional background, and what he was doing in connection with SIC,” Asafo‑Adjei Ayeh said on Joy FM’s Top Story programme. “The interrogation centred on the SIC issue.”

Before the search of the Manhyia South MP’s office began, ECO C officials informed the MP’s legal team that they were seeking documents directly related to the SIC matter. Baffour Awuah reportedly told investigators that all relevant files had already been submitted to the company and that any additional material could be obtained directly from SIC.

The MP also cautioned the investigators against accessing confidential client documents unrelated to the case. Asafo‑Adjei Ayeh noted that he was not present in the office during the search and therefore could not verify which papers were ultimately removed by ECO C officials.

Following the office inspection, the officials informed the MP’s counsel that they intended to continue the search at Baffour Awuah’s private residence.

The investigation against the Manhyia South MP stems from alleged unauthorised financial transactions involving SIC Life Savings & Loans Company Ltd. Deputy Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr Justice Srem‑Sai, confirmed that the probe covers suspected offences such as financial loss, dissipation of public funds and money laundering.

Political commentators have since weighed in on the case, accusing ECO C of possible political intimidation. Calls for the immediate release of the Manhyia South MP have been made, with some suggesting the questioning may be a ploy to sideline opposition voices.

The Bosome Freho MP reaffirmed his readiness to cooperate fully with any official inquiry, stating that he will not ignore any legitimate invitation from ECO C.
