Lawyer of Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah confirms EOCO has formally charged him with money laundering and causing state financial loss.

Lawyer Samuel Atta Akyea has confirmed that the Economic and Organised Crime Office formally charged Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah with money laundering and causing financial loss to the state in a case linked to SIC Life Savings and Loans transactions. EOCO alleges unauthorised financial dealings involving SIC Life triggered the charges after the Accra High Court issued an arrest warrant. Mr Baffour Awuah reported himself to EOCO on Thursday after a warrant for his arrest and document seizure was issued. He is currently in custody cooperating with investigators as EOCO maintains its probe concerns alleged financial misconduct tied to this transaction.

Mr Atta Akyea rejected the allegations strongly, insisting the legal actions taken by his client were legitimate professional work, not criminal conduct. He cited court judgments and documentary evidence proving SIC Life hired the law firm to recover investments from Equity Savings and Loans. The lawyer noted the entry of judgment documented around GH¢10 million owed, not the reported GH¢14 million figure, with interest included in the final amount. Documentation shows their involvement followed standard legal procedures under court supervision.

Within the legal community, Atta Akyea argues EOCO exceeds its mandate by pursuing matters clearly within judicial resolution. He questioned how recoveries obtained through lawful court processes could constitute criminal activity, stating The power play is disgusting regarding the MP’s detention. Critics like Afenyo-Markin demand his immediate release from custody while OccupyGhana calls for parliamentary scrutiny of EOCO activities. The case forms part of a growing public debate over whether such investigations target political figures fairly or abuse state power under the guise of anti-corruption enforcement.

How soon the legal process unfolds next is unclear. With the MP detained, attention remains on whether EOCO can justify its investigative scope amid mounting accusations of political victimisation. The next court hearing date has not been publicly announced, leaving observers waiting for the judiciary to determine if the charges proceed based on evidence presented.
