AMA Demolishes Unauthorized Structures at Kofikrom Amid Fire Aftermath

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly has begun clearing makeshift buildings at Kofikrom in the North Industrial Area following a fire incident.
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly, working alongside the 48 Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces, has started removing unauthorized structures at Kofikrom in the North Industrial Area. This follows a May 29, 2026 directive requiring occupants to vacate the area. The operation comes after a fire broke out in the industrial zone, raising safety concerns. The AMA cited ongoing illegal occupancy as a major hazard that contributed to the fire's spread. Many of the structures were built without proper permits and posed significant fire risks. The demolition exercise aims to enforce compliance and prevent future incidents. The move is part of broader efforts to regulate the North Industrial Area, a key economic hub in Accra. The AMA emphasized that no occupant was forcibly removed without prior notice. All affected persons were given the legally mandated period to leave. The 48 Engineer Regiment provided technical support for the safe removal process. This action underscores the Assembly's commitment to urban planning and public safety enforcement.
